Bastion Mountain Ranch

Tales and Reflections by Caroline Miege

My family lived on a Ranch full time from 1993 until 2015. We were a 5th generation family farm.

I am writing this blog to share my experiences living there. It is best to read the blog chronologically by going through the archives, starting with the introduction in January of 2010. The blog starts with the arrival of my great-grandparents to the farm in 1946 and will follow the families to the present.

Life and Loss on a Family Farm

I am writing this to share my experiences on a family farm.
For many years now family farms have encountered huge pressures on an economic level as the "factory farm" takes over the production of food. Family Farms are quickly becoming an institution of the past.
The workings of a family farm are incredibly complex as there are factors other than economics that influence its passage through time.
The farms find themselves navigating a myriad of factors; food fads, rising production costs, family dynamics, rural culture, land values and agritourism. It is only possible to view my own personal experiences within this larger framework.
